William and Tovar’s search for black powder takes them to the middle of a large and almost completely desolate desert where one night they are attacked by a beast. William kills it and manages to cut off its hand. A local Chinese garrison recognizes the hand as belonging to a Tao Tie, a four-legged beast that feasts on man. Every 60 years, the Tao Tie comes out in groups and causes great chaos to the Great Wall of China to reach Bianliang and feast on the residents.
William and Tovar travel to the Great Wall, but are greeted with arrows upon their arrival. They are taken captive by the Nameless Order and when they show the beast’s arm, the soldiers react with fear. Strategist Wang, General Lin and General Shao question William and Tovar over where they encountered the beast. When General Lin asks why they are in the area, William doesn’t tell the truth and says they wanted to trade but were ambushed.
More beasts are sighted making their way to the Great Wall. The generals and their armies battle the beasts. William and Tovar are freed and they join the fray. They take down one beast with a spear and the rest of the pack retreats. William and Tovar earn the respect of the soldiers and stay as guests. They meet another European named Ballard who set out 25 years ago to find black powder, but was also taken prisoner. William displays his archery skills. Ballard creates a plan for William, Tovar and himself to take the black powder and escape while the soldiers are preoccupied in battle. William and Tovar tell Wang about the magnetic stone William had on him while fighting the beast.
The beasts attack the soldiers once again, resulting in Shao’s death and leaving Lin in charge. A scroll from Bianliang arrives, stating how to use the magnetic stone to repel the beast. William suggests capturing one Tao Tie and sedating it to test this plan. The group manages to capture a monster and test the strategy. The Tao Tie recoils at the sight of the magnetic stone.
Things are starting to fall apart between William and Tovar, with the latter thinking William has forgotten about him and their goal and telling William that he’ll be nothing but a liar. Meanwhile, the soldiers discover a large hole that the beasts created to get inside the Wall. Tovar and Ballard also find black powder concealed within the walls and use some to blow open the door where the rest of the powder is being stored. William discovers Ballard and Tovar taking materials. Ballard knocks William out and they escape.
Thinking that they can’t stop the beasts, the soldiers travel to Bianliang and show the Emperor, played by Wang Junkai, the captured Taotie. Lin discovers a seized William and his original intentions. She’s enraged and declares she would kill him. William is defended by a young soldier named Peng Yong, played by Lu Han and tells them that Ballard and Tovar took the powder. William is imprisoned and Lin and her troops chase after the other two. Ballard and Tovar ride through the dessert, but Ballard leaves Tovar when he senses an approaching threat. Ballard is taken by the Khitan bandits, while Tovar is captured by the Chinese soldiers. The bandits unintentionally ignite the powder and blow themselves as well as Ballard up.
The soldiers fight the monsters over the city using hot air balloons, but they are sent falling to their deaths when the balloons start burning up. William is freed and told by Wang that their goal is to kill the Taotie queen. Peng Yong joins them. The Emperor removes the stone from near the beast to gain control of the beast, but it backfires as it causes the monster to wake up and call the other beasts to its location. More fighting follows and William, Peng and Wang reunite with Lin as they see the Tao Tie queen being protected by thousands of Tao Tie.
They put explosives all over the captured beast and give it meat to bring to the queen Tao Tie. Other monsters start attacking them and Peng stay behind to hold off the beasts. Peng ignites some black powder, blowing himself and the monsters up. Wang, William and Lin release the captured Tao Tie and hold it with magnetic stones and it rejoins the other beasts. The three go to the tower to kill the queen with rockets, but she’s surrounded by bigger monsters with scales that can repel the rockets. Wang is killed, but throws Lin a magnetic stone before he dies. William throws the stone into the path of the Tao Tie queen before Lin fires the rocket, which explodes and kills the queen and the rest of the monsters.
After the events, Lin became regional general and William will be given a reward – a large amount of black powder. However, he asks for Tovar to be released so that they may go back to Europe. The two reconcile and after saying their goodbyes to Lin, they start traveling back home.
